Photo of the Week: Water Line on Crete’s Southern Coast, Agia Roumeli, Crete, Greece
One of the notable features in the geology of Crete’s Southern Coast is a water line, seen in this picture running horizontally in the center of the frame. In 365 AD, a powerful earthquake tilted the island, pushing the southern end of Crete vertically by ten meters. The earthquake and the following tsunami caused massive destruction and killed thousands throughout Crete, Egypt, Libya and even Italy. Can you imagine the sound? And the feeling of those who witnessed this?
