Touring the Isle of Skye

Because of the distances between sights and my lack of a car, I took a one-day bus tour of the Isle of Skye.  We saw a lot, but there was so much we didn’t see.  Even with a car, I could have easily spent a week on the Isle of Skye sightseeing and hiking.   It is gorgeous.  Stunning scenery in every direction.

Quiraing Trail, Isle of Skye

The highlight of the day was walking a trail in the Quiraing a.k.a. Cuith Raing, above the town of  Staffin on the northeast of the Isle of Skye.  The Quiraing is a mammoth landslide that continues to slip very slowly.  Jagged peaks meet rolling soft boggy hills meet the sea.  The trail was narrow with lots of rockslides on both sides.  If you’re interested in doing this walk, there is more information here.  You’ll find information about any walk in Scotland here.

We also stopped briefly in Portree, the island’s capitol, which has a beautiful harbor.  We saw “Kilt Rock” a basalt cliff in north east Trotternish that resembles it’s namesake.

I had a good experience staying at Skye Backpackers.  Very nice staff there and a cozy place which was just what I needed.
