A Walk Along the Shore in Cape Town, South Africa
Today was a (relatively) lazy Sunday. Darren, Rob and I decided to do as the locals do and enjoy a walk along the seaside promenade. Public transportation is excellent and a quick bus ride took us to the very scenic Bantry Bay/Clifton Beach area where we strolled. And saw a whale from the shore!
I can not believe the color of the ocean here. It is a magnificent greenish-blue that I haven’t seen anywhere else in the world. Add white sand beaches and lots of sun (but low humidity) and you’ve got yourself a recipe for paradise. And sunburn. I learned that the painful way.
Surprisingly, the beaches are not crowded. There are so many of them to choose from!
Cape Town has done such a nice job of keeping big development off the immediate coastline. There are lots of nice parks to enjoy and a huge public pool right above the water where families can enjoy the day together.
After a long walk back to the Green Point area, we walked through Green Point Urban Park which is beside the Cape Town Stadium (built in 2010 for the FIFA World Cup). What a gorgeous place. It features a Biodiversity Showcase Garden. So well-designed.
I am so pleasantly surprised by this city. It was recently named #1 place to visit in 2014 by the New York Times. I can see why.
Lucky for me, I got here early.
